“I’M FAMISHED,” Harper admitted. Oh no. I’m in one of those moods again when everything looks good.

“Thanks, Francine.” Petra sipped from her tall ice tea that had just been delivered. “God, I love this stuff. Alex, hand me over a fake sugar packet. Nope. Not the yellow, the pink one, please. There we go. Thanks.”

“I wish it was pot pie day,” Alex lamented. “I used to chow those down all the time when I worked here.”

“They are tasty. When is pot pie day anyway?” Harper peered over his menu.

“Whenever Audrey gets a little ahead with her pies and muffins,” Alex explained.

“I’ve never ordered one. I’m not sure I’ve been in here on pot pie day, come to think of it.” Petra glanced over her menu. “Salad—I’m trying so hard to eat healthier, but to save my soul I never seem to be able to fire up for salad.”

“I can never order a salad either. Too many other things always look better,” Alex piped in.

“I don’t get out much. This is so nice of you guys to invite me to lunch.” Petra sucked half a glass of tea down through her straw.

“We thought it was the least we could do with all the shenanigans you have to put up with.” Harper looked over to Alex, who nodded in agreement. “We’re buying your affection.”

Francine returned, and they placed their order.

“So, details about the overnight in Bayfield with Betsy have been few and far between. Did you have a good time?” Harper asked after a steaming cup of split pea soup had been placed in front of him.

“Betsy’s been bitten by the special. She’s a breath of fresh air, and you know the best thing?” Petra asked.

“Harper?” Alex whispered across the table. “Brace yourself. I think this next part involves girlie parts.”

“Listen, sweet pea,” Petra challenged, “I could fire off a list of girlie parts a mile long, and you’d probably confuse them for burger toppings.”

Francine delivered their lunches, and after she had unloaded them from an enormous oval serving tray, Harper asked, “Do you think you’ll be seeing more of her?”

“I’m fighting it every step of the way, but the truth is I’m falling in love with her.”

“That’s awesome, Petra.” Alex reached over to her, initiating a high-five. “I think she’s really pretty. She’s pretty in a natural way. Not in a made-up or fake way.”

“Thank you, Alex. That’s what I think too.”

Petra, if you could see your face right now. You’re radiant. “I know with your schedules you haven’t had a chance to spend much time together. Are you talking a lot on the phone?” Harper bit into his green olive burger. “Oh, I’ll be ordering this again. Damn, talk about tasty.”

“I wish I liked green olives. Just can’t go there.” Petra dunked her French dip in a cup of au jus and bit off a large hunk, savoring the taste for a moment by closing her eyes. “Here’s the deal with Betsy.” Petra placed the remainder of her sandwich on her plate and brushed her napkin across her mouth.
